DETAILS

Before the presentation, enjoy a light reception on the brick patio in front of the Transportation Building. Be sure to step inside to see Sharlot M. Hall's Durant "Star" convertible which she purchased in 1927 for $737. Then, just before 5:30, head over to the Education Center Auditorium for a step back in time to hear from Sharlot Herself. Born in 1870 in Kansas, Sharlot arrived in the Arizona Territory in 1881 as a young and curious child. Early on she showed an interest and talent in storytelling and poetry, as well as history. As a young woman, Sharlot worked as a journalist, poet and essayist and was a regular contributor to a number of magazines. In 1905 she wrote the poem "Arizona" in response to efforts made to the U.S. Congress to admit the Arizona Territory as a single state instead as part of New Mexico. She was later appointed the Territorial Historian. After a break from public life to care for her parents, Sharlot began her work in establishing the "Old Governor's Mansion Museum" using her own collections and artifacts in what was the home, or mansion, to Arizona's Territorial's first governor's. This was the beginning of today's Sharlot Hall Museum. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from Sharlot in her own words.
